Stalag VII A: Oral history

Gilbert and Pierre Roughol

All pictures were taken by Pierre (my grand uncle) and Gilbert Roughol (my grand father). We don't quite know how or why they ended up in the same Stalag VII A together, something we thought the administration of camps was trying to keep separate. Here are some excerpts on both Pierre and Gilbert.

Gilbert Roughol:

Taken prisoner in Cornimont, France, on June 20th 1940, he arrived 5 days later to the temporary camp of Neu-Brisach in Elsass under the number 66798. After 3 weeks there, he was sent on July 23rd to Stalag VII A in Moosburg, where he arrived on August 2nd under the number 44098. His name was published on the official list of French prisoners on January 31st 1941, as follows: Roughol Gilbert, 29 février 1908, Paris, 1ere classe, 8eme Train, Stalag VII A Though we have no trace of his actual work in Stalag VII-A, noticeably his assignments to Arbeitskommandos, he fell gravely ill during his time in Moosburg, and he was liberated due to his sickness on November 24th 1942

Pierre Roughol:

Pierre was taken prisoner in Granges sur Vologne, on June 26th 1940. His stay in Germany was somewhat more chaotic. First sent to Stalag VII-A on July 27th 1940, Pierre was then sent to Stalag VII B in Memmingen on August 15th 1940 and assigned to ArbeitsKommando 1055 (not sure what this one did); but his arrival there was only recorded on September 6th. He was then sent back on November 4th 1940 to Stalag VII A again, and stayed there until November 24th 1942, when he was freed at the exact same time as his brother Gilbert.
